Kernel Hearts FAQ
Answers to the most common questions about the Kernel Hearts game.
Is Kernel Hearts free to play?
No — Kernel Hearts is a premium purchase on Steam for Windows with no confirmed microtransactions. Content updates from Ephemera Games and Whitethorn Games are expected to be free for all owners.
What platforms is Kernel Hearts on?
Currently Windows PC via Steam. Ephemera Games has not announced console versions; the system requirements page covers the minimum and recommended specs. The game supports 1-4 player co-op.
How do I unlock the second floor, The Heavenly Courtyard?
Defeat the Floor 1 Guardian in The Outer Gates and pick up the Floor Access Key it drops, then use the key on the sealed upward gate. The Guardian itself requires the Guardian Sigil, a free reward from the introductory quest chain.
How many bosses are in Kernel Hearts?
Two at launch: the Floor 1 Guardian (Floor 1, easy) and the Floor 2 Guardian (Floor 2, hard). Each boss page covers the summon item, mechanics and a step-by-step strategy.
What are chips and how do they work?
Chips are the equipment system in Kernel Hearts. You load them onto your MAHOU.OS (max 256KB budget) to customize attacks, spells, and movement. Mix and match within the budget for each fight.
How do I summon a boss?
Each boss has a specific summon item: the Guardian Sigil (free quest reward) opens the Floor 1 sealed gate, and the Divine Crown (forged from three Angel Shards) goes on the Floor 2 throne platform.
How does elemental weakness work?
Every enemy is attuned to one element and weak to its opposite. Hitting the weakness doubles your damage and fills your transformation gauge faster. Since both guardians are on the fire-ice axis, Ice and Fire chips are the universal answer.
How long does it take to beat Kernel Hearts?
A focused story run is 6-8 hours; 100% completion (all 44 achievements plus the Divine Seal) takes 10-15 hours. Nothing is missable and there are no difficulty settings.
Does Kernel Hearts have co-op or multiplayer?
Yes — drop-in co-op for up to 4 players, including both guardian fights. Difficulty scales with player count. Cross-play details are TBA from the developers.
What is the M.A.H.O.U Unit?
The M.A.H.O.U Unit is the team of 4 magical girls who climb the Tower of Babel. At launch, 3 characters are available: Unit Alpha, Unit Beta, and Unit Gamma. Unit Delta is confirmed but not yet playable.
What is the transformation system?
Transformation dispels the Heavenly Curse and reveals your true magical girl form. Fill the gauge by hitting elemental weaknesses, then transform for a powerful temporary state with enhanced abilities.
How do I make fragments fast in the early game?
Farm angel patrols on the main-path circuit: roughly 320 fragments per hour. The one-time quest rewards (~450 fragments) pay even better — take that chain the moment it unlocks.
What is the Bond system?
The Bond system lets you build relationships with tower inhabitants. Higher bond levels unlock bonus dialogue, chip discounts at the laboratory, and character-specific bonuses during fights.
Is more content coming to Kernel Hearts?
The game released September 18, 2026. Ephemera Games and Whitethorn Games have not yet published a detailed roadmap, but the sealed upper tower suggests future floor content. The Divine Seal from 100% completion is implied to gate future areas.
